TASAKI 70 Year Anniversary – April 2024

In April 2024 TASAKI celebrated their 70 year anniversary! To mark this incredible milestone Melanie was asked to create a special piece for M/G TASAKI which would be presented in the celebratory Floating Shell exhibition, which started in Tokyo at BA-TSU Art Gallery (until 12th May 2024) but will travel to various global locations later this year. Melanie wanted to do something truly special, that had never been done before, and as M/G TASAKI has always explored a fine fashion direction it felt natural to apply jewellery elements, materials and techniques to create a one-of-a-kind garment. The result is a t-shirt, made entirely from pearls. Threaded entirely by hand this very special piece took over 6 months of intense and intricate work to complete. It features over 19,000 freshwater pearls and Melanie sites it as the most ambitious project she has ever taken on. Melanie was thrilled to travel to Japan to join in the celebrations and see the opening of the exhibition along with the launch of a beautiful new book by Maria Doulton and published by Rizzoli which explores TASAKI’s rich history.
